Artificial Grass: The Complete Buyer's Guide for 2025
Artificial grass has transformed from a cheap-looking novelty into a genuinely beautiful, low-maintenance alternative to real lawn. But not all artificial grass is equal — here's everything you need to know before you buy.

Pile Height: Which is Right for You?
Pile height (the length of the grass blades) is the most visible characteristic of artificial grass. It ranges from around 20mm to 40mm+.
Short pile (20–25mm): Looks neat and formal, like a well-maintained lawn. Best for contemporary gardens, patios and balconies. More durable in high-traffic areas.
Medium pile (30–35mm): The most popular choice. Looks natural and lush without being too long. Good balance of appearance and durability.
Long pile (37mm+): The most natural-looking option. Creates a soft, meadow-like appearance. Less suitable for heavy use as the long blades can flatten under furniture or foot traffic.
Blade Shape and Colour
Modern artificial grass uses a variety of blade shapes to mimic real grass more convincingly. Flat blades look neat but can look artificial in certain lights. C-shaped or W-shaped blades are more resilient and spring back better after compression. S-shaped blades have the most natural movement and appearance.
Look for grass with multiple shades of green (typically 2–4 colours) plus brown thatch fibres woven in at the base. This multi-tone approach looks far more realistic than single-colour products.
Drainage: Critical for Bristol's Rainfall
Bristol receives around 800mm of rainfall per year — more than the UK average. Good drainage is essential to prevent puddles and waterlogging.
Quality artificial grass has a perforated backing that allows water to drain through. Look for a drainage rate of at least 30 litres per square metre per hour — quality products achieve 60–100 litres/m²/hour.
The base preparation is equally important. A properly installed artificial grass system includes a compacted sub-base (typically MOT Type 1 crushed stone) and a layer of sharp sand to ensure water drains away efficiently.
Durability and Warranty
Quality artificial grass should last 15–25 years with proper care. The key factors affecting longevity are UV resistance (look for UV-stabilised fibres), the quality of the backing material, and the density of the pile (measured in stitches per square metre).
Look for a minimum 8-year manufacturer's warranty for domestic use. Some premium products carry 10–15 year warranties. Be wary of products with warranties shorter than 5 years.
Is Artificial Grass Safe for Children and Pets?
Quality artificial grass is safe for both children and pets. Modern products are made from non-toxic polyethylene fibres and are tested to European safety standards.
For homes with pets, look for grass with good drainage (pet urine drains through quickly) and consider a deodorising infill material. Rinse the grass periodically with water to keep it fresh.
For children, artificial grass is generally safer than real grass — no mud, no pesticides, no uneven ground. The surface is softer than paving and provides some cushioning for falls.
Professional Installation: Why It Matters
The quality of installation makes as much difference as the quality of the grass itself. Poor base preparation leads to uneven surfaces, poor drainage and the grass lifting or wrinkling over time.
Professional installation includes: removing existing lawn and topsoil, installing a weed membrane, laying and compacting a sub-base, adding a sand layer, fitting the grass with proper joins and edges, and adding infill material.
