Best Carpet for a Bedroom: The Complete Guide

Your bedroom carpet is the first thing your feet touch every morning. Get it right and it transforms the room — warm, soft and quiet. Get it wrong and you'll be replacing it within five years. Here's everything you need to know.

Which Carpet Pile is Best for a Bedroom?

Bedrooms are low-traffic rooms, which means you have more freedom to choose softer, more luxurious pile types that would wear too quickly in a hallway or living room.

Saxony carpet is the gold standard for bedrooms. The long, cut pile gives a deep, plush feel underfoot and a smooth, uniform appearance. It shows footprints and vacuum marks — which some people love as it shows the carpet is genuinely thick — but this is purely cosmetic and wipes away easily.

Twist pile carpet is the most popular choice overall. The fibres are twisted tightly, which makes them more resilient than saxony while still feeling soft. It's a great all-rounder for bedrooms, especially in family homes where the room might double as a play area.

Velvet or velour pile gives the most luxurious appearance — a smooth, flat surface that looks like a high-end hotel. It's best suited to master bedrooms where foot traffic is genuinely low.

Loop pile (Berber) is more durable but has a rougher texture underfoot. We generally don't recommend it for bedrooms unless you specifically want a textured, contemporary look.

What Fibre Should You Choose?

Wool is the premium choice. It's naturally soft, naturally fire-resistant, regulates temperature (warm in winter, cool in summer), and lasts for decades with proper care. A good wool carpet in a bedroom can last 20–30 years. The downside is cost — expect to pay £25–£50/m² for quality wool.

Polypropylene (PP) is the budget-friendly option. It's stain-resistant, easy to clean and available in hundreds of colours. The downside is that it doesn't bounce back as well as wool after compression, so it can flatten in high-use areas. For a bedroom, this is less of a concern.

Nylon sits in the middle — more resilient than polypropylene, softer than most synthetics, and significantly cheaper than wool. It's a solid choice for children's bedrooms where durability matters more than luxury.

Wool-blend (typically 80% wool, 20% synthetic) gives you most of the benefits of pure wool at a lower price point. This is the sweet spot for most bedrooms.

What Underlay Should You Use?

Underlay makes more difference to how a carpet feels than most people realise. A good underlay adds cushioning, insulation, and sound absorption — and it extends the life of your carpet by preventing the backing from wearing against the subfloor.

For bedrooms, we recommend a 10–12mm thick foam or rubber underlay. This gives the most luxurious feel underfoot. If you have underfloor heating, you'll need a specialist low-tog underlay — ask our team for advice specific to your system.

Don't skimp on underlay. A cheap carpet on good underlay will feel better than an expensive carpet on poor underlay.

What Colour Carpet Works Best in a Bedroom?

Colour choice is personal, but there are a few practical considerations worth knowing.

Light colours (cream, ivory, pale grey) make a room feel larger and more airy. They show marks more easily but are easier to spot-clean before stains set.

Mid-tones (warm grey, taupe, biscuit) are the most practical — they hide everyday dirt while still feeling fresh and neutral. These are the most popular choices in Bristol bedrooms.

Dark colours (charcoal, navy, deep plum) create a dramatic, cocooning feel. They show dust and fluff more than mid-tones, so they need more frequent vacuuming.

Our advice: bring home samples before you decide. Carpet colours look very different under store lighting versus natural daylight in your bedroom. We offer free home visits where we bring samples to you — call us to arrange one.

How Much Does Bedroom Carpet Cost in Bristol?

Bedroom carpet prices in Bristol vary considerably depending on quality, fibre and pile type. Here's a realistic guide:

  • Budget range (£12–£18/m²): Polypropylene twist pile. Perfectly serviceable for a spare room or children's bedroom.
  • Mid-range (£19–£25/m²): Good quality nylon or wool-blend twist. The sweet spot for most bedrooms.
  • Premium (£26–£40/m²): Pure wool saxony or velvet pile. Long-lasting, luxurious and worth every penny for a master bedroom.

These prices are for carpet only. Add underlay (typically £8–£12/m²), gripper rods (£2.50/linear metre) and professional fitting (£5/m²) for a complete installed cost. Use our free calculator to get an instant estimate for your room.
