LVT vs Laminate Flooring: Which is Right for You?

Both LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) and laminate flooring offer the look of real wood or stone at an affordable price. But they are very different products that perform differently in different environments. Here is everything you need to know.

What is LVT?

LVT is a multi-layer synthetic flooring product. The top layer is a high-definition photographic print protected by a clear wear layer. Below that is a rigid or flexible core, and at the bottom is a backing layer. The result is a floor that looks incredibly realistic and is completely waterproof.

What is Laminate?

Laminate flooring has a similar structure but uses a different core material — typically high-density fibreboard (HDF). The top layer is a photographic print protected by a melamine resin wear layer. Standard laminate is not waterproof, though water-resistant options are available.

Key Differences

• Water resistance: LVT is 100% waterproof. Standard laminate is not — it can swell and buckle if water gets underneath it.
• Underfoot feel: LVT feels softer and warmer underfoot. Laminate can sound hollow when walked on.
• Durability: Both are durable, but LVT is generally more resistant to dents and scratches.
• Installation: Both can be installed as floating floors. LVT can also be glued down.
• Price: Laminate is generally cheaper than LVT, though premium laminate can cost as much as entry-level LVT.

Which Should You Choose?

If you are fitting flooring in a kitchen, bathroom, hallway or any other area that might get wet, choose LVT. If you are fitting flooring in a living room or bedroom where water is not a concern, laminate is a cost-effective choice.
